Undeterred by strike, Paradip records highest traffic ever

Despite a spell of strike by stevedores and a few other stakeholders in Septmeber, Paradip Port Trust registered the highest ever traffic of 36.06 million tonnes in the first six months (April to September-2015) as compared to 34.35 million tonnes of cargo handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.

This is an increase of five percent over the traffic handled during corresponding period of previous year. The port has retained the second position among the Major Ports of India, said officials of PPT.

During the above period thermal coal traffic has increased by 8.71 percent by handling 14.83 million tonnes against 13.64 million tones handled during the corresponding period of previous year. POL traffic has also registered a growth of 6.40 percent by handling 9.52 million tonnes against 8.94 million tonnes handled of the previous year. A total of 771 vessels were handled in the Port during the period as against 692 vessels in the first six months of 2014. This is an increase of 11.41 percent, said port officials.

Incidentally, with the support of East Coast Rlys, the evacuation of imported cargo from the Port has improved substantially as the Port has been in a position to liquidate 312 number of pending indents.
